The Baber Family

The Baber Family
The name Baber belongs to the early history of Britain, it's origins lie with the Anglo-Saxons. It is a product of their having lived in Baber, in the county of Suffolk. There is also a place in Cornwall called Baber (sometimes known as St. Dominick) from which some cases of the name may originate, but it is of later origin than the one in Suffolk.  Significantly, one source notes that the name could have been Gaelic in origin, from "Babair or Basbair, a fencer or swordsman; one who, by his blows, produced death; from Bas, death, and fear, a man."
Castillo Hill Baber was born 14 Mar 1804 in Buckingham County, Virginia, son of Isaac Baber (1769-1845) and Sarah Tapscott (1774-1812).  He married firstly Martha C. Brooks (b. 10 Nov 1809, Buckingham County, Virginia; d. 26 Feb 1862 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Castillo married secondly, Nancy D. Castillo and his wife, Martha, donated land on Rocky Fork to build Baber Chapel. The name was changed to Baber-Agee Chapel and then, in 1844 the church joined the Methodist Episcopal South denomination.   The first trustees were Joseph Agee, H. Agee, C. Baber, A. Kelly, and J. Patterson.  Castillo died on 22 Mar 1894 in Kanawha County, WV and is buried, alongside his wife Martha, in the Baber-Sprigel Cemetery on the family farm (Rt. 4, Box 103) located just off Rocky Fork Road near the Poca River.  Castillo and Martha’s children were:
