The Beane Family
 
The surname Beane comes from the Gaelic word Beathan or betha which means life. Bean was also the name of a saint in the Breviary of Aberdeen. The surname Beane was first found in Aberdeen, where one of the first times the name arose was a Bean who was a magistrate circa 1210. It is believed that the MacBains transferred to Inverness-shire, as sod bearers to the Chiefs of the famous tribe Chattan.


William M. Beane was born 18 Sep 1792 in Baltimore, Maryland. William was the son of a soldier who served in Lord Cornwall's Army in the American Revolutionary War, who came with one of the regiments raised in Ireland. After the war, he remained in the United States of America. He married Rachel Wiseman (b. Abt 1790 in Monroe County, Virginia; d. 1856), the daughter of J. Wiseman and E. Rockbridge, on 20 Nov 1813 in Monroe County, Virginia.  William and Rachel are listed in the 1850 census for Monroe County, Virginia.  Willaim M. Beane died 1 Jan 1864 at age 71 in Potts Creek, Monroe County, West Virginia.  He is buried in the Beane Cemetery, Potts Creek, Monroe County, West Virginia.  William and Rachel’s thirteen children were all born in Monroe County, Virginia, either at the homeplace on Potts Creek or on the farm on Dropping Lick Creek.  They were:

Emily Beane (1813 - 1889) married Thomas Long

Nancy Beane (1815 - 1856) died unmarried.

Lucinda S. Beane (1817 - 1869), married Samuel Honaker.

Elizabeth "Betty Beane, (1818-1886) married Charles Carney.

Sarah Ann Beane (1819 - 1894), married Wilson Kesinger.

John Jackson Beane was born on 24 Mar 1821 in Virginia.  John is listed in the 1850 (Putnam Co.) and in the 1860 census for Kanawha County, WV.  He is also listed in the 1870 and 1880 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, WV.  John married Mary A. Summers, daughter of Samuel Summers and Willamina Summers on 23 Oct 1849 in Putnam County, WV.  He married secondly, Eliza J. Holmes on 5 Oct 1873 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  John died on 26 Jun 1890 in Kanawha County, WV.  John and Mary’s children were:

1. Servatus Summer “Bub” Beane was born on 25 Oct 1850 in Winfield, Putnam County, Virginia.  He married Lucinda R. Matthews on 1 Sep 1874 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Bub died on 29 May 1925. [see The Children of Servatus Summer Beane and Lucinda R. Matthews below]

2. William Samuel “Sam” Beane was born on 29 May 1852 in either Putnam County or Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Mary Galina Johnson, daughter of Willliam H. Johnson and Louvina Samuels, on 23 Aug 1877 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  [see The Children of William Samuel Beane and Mary Galine Johnson below]

3. Arabella Wilmira “Willie Bell” Beane was born on 12 Mar 1855 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She died on 24 Jul 1872. 

4. James Henry Beane was born in Jun 1855 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married firstly, Sarah Frances Goff (1858) on 21 Apr 1875 in Kanawha County, WV, and married secondly, Rebecca Emma Patterson (1869) on 28 Jul 1893.  “Jim” Beane died on 21 Sep 1923.  [see The Children of James Henry Beane and Sarah Frances Goff below]

5. Baby Beane (Male) was born on 1 May 1858.

6. Baby Beane (Female) was born in Jul 1859.

7. and 8. 2 Other Baby Beane’s were born before 1865 and died in infancy.

Thomas Nelson Beane , was born between 1822-1825 in Monroe County, Virginia. married Eliza Jane Hanks. 

Margaret Jane Beane, (1823-?) married Alexander W. Eakins.

Archibald M. Beane was born on 6 Oct 1826 in Monroe County, Virginia.  He married firstly Amanda Shires on 1 Jan 1849 in Monroe County, Virginia, and married secondly, Margaret Ann Dunbar (1832) on 8 Dec 1853.  Archibald and Amanda’s children were:

1. John W. Beane was born Abt 1849 in Monroe County, Virginia.

2. Alafare Beane was born Abt 1851 in Monroe County, Virginia.  She married George W. Wickline (Abt 1840) on 24 Dec 1867 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

1. Mary V. Beane was born Abt 1854 in Monroe County, Virginia.

2, Madora W. Beane was born on 25 Jun 1855 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Edward L. Torman (Abt 1859) on 19 Jul 1882 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

3. Alonzo F. Beane was born on 15 Jul 1857 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

4. Baby Beane (Male) was on 7 Feb 1858 in Kanawha County, Virgnia.

5. Wellington G. Beane was born on 10 Mar 1859 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Eliza V. Woods on 30 Nov 1880 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

6. Augustus F. Beane was born Abt 1861 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Janette E. Torman (Abt 1866) on 20 Dec 1881 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

7. Adeline Beane was born Abt 1868 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

8. Charles Beane was born Abt 1871 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

9. Bertha Beane was born Abt 1874 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

William Forrest Beane was born on 15 June 1875 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married firstly, Ida Thomas, and married secondly, Mary Margaret Carney (1877), daughter of Henry Frank Carney (1850-1933) and Araminta S. Huffman (1849) on 12 May 1897 in Sissonville, Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  William is listed in the 1880, 1910 and 1920 for Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  William died in Sep 1948.  William and Mary’s children were:

1. Goldie Beatrice Beane was born on 14 Oct 1897 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Cecil H. Pritt (1897-1977), son of James Franklin Pritt and Minnie Bell Fisher, on 18 Nov 1916.  Goldie died in 1981.

2. Golden S. “Bus” Beane was born on Jun 1899 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Corda Thomas in 1919.  “Bus” died on 20 Sep 1963 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

3. Gobel F. Beane was born Abt 1901 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

4. Ruby Beane was born on 18 May 1903 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Howard Martin in 1922.  Ruby died on 16 Oct 1975.

5. Gloe Kyle “Soup” Beane was born on 17 Mar 1905 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Clemmie Gibson in 1934.  “Soup” died on 8 Sep 1986.

6. Irene Beane was born on 21 May 1910 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Robert F. Buckalew in 1927.

7. Mildred Beane was born on 24 Jun 1912 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married John Lacy in 1910.
 
Effie Beatrice Beane was born on 6 May 1877 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married James Spicer “Spice” Fisher (1871-1962) in 1901.  Effie died on 18 Apr 1908.

John J. Beane was born on 14 Feb 1878 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married firstly, Ora Woodall (1880), daughter of Erastus Alexander Woodall and Rebecca Jane Hager, in 1899.  John married secondly, Lillian Christine Humphrey on 5 Dec 1910.  John is listed in the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  John died on 29 Jul 1963.  John and Ora’s children were:

1. Charles Beane was born in 1900 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Charles died in 1907 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

2. Senate Benton Beane was born on 8 Jun 1901 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Helen Carter. Senate died on 21 Apr 1973.

3, Paul Blackburn Beane was born on 21 Oct 1903 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Margaret Rassie in 1928. 

4, Kenneth Clifford Beane was born on 29 Jul 1905 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Inez Corley Pierce.  Kenneth died on 1 May 1975.

Ida G. Beane was born in Jan 1883 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married George B. Gibson (1876) Abt 1900.  Ida died Bef 1911.
Ruby Pearl Beane was born in May 1884 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

1. Mary Eliza Beane was born in Jul 1878 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Jefferson L. Barrett (Abt 1871) on 16 Apr 1894 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

2. Wilhelmina E. Beane was born on 15 May 1880 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  A schoolteacher, she never married.  Wilhelmina, known affectionately as “Aunt Wee,” died on 9 Jul 1975.

3. Edgar Arnold Beane was born on 28 Apr 1882 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Myra C. Melton (1887) in Abt 1904.  Edgar died on 5 Oct 1958.   [see The Children of Edgar Arnold Beane and Myra C. Melton below]

4. Albert Allen Beane was born on 13 Dec 1884 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Albert died on 28 Jun 1947.

5. Lawrence Summers Beane was born on 29 Jan 1887 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Lola Lowe in 1922.  Lawrence died on 14 Jun 1973.

6. Samuel Clarence Beane was born on 2 May 1889 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Wava Drake in 1924.  Samuel died on 10 Apr 1940.

7. Lula Louvina Beane was born on 18 Aug 1890 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Bert Jones.  Lula died on 6 Mar 1949.

8. Kathrine Belle Beane was born on 10 Jun 1893 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married William Jarrett on 17 Apr.1923.  Katherine died on 24 Jun 1967.

9. Carl Henry Beane was born in Mar 1896 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Lucille Miner in 1924.  Carl died on 4 Mar 1951.
 

The Children of James Henry Beane and Sarah Frances Goff

Cora Bell Beane was born on 23 Jul 1876.  She married John B. Bailey.  Cora died on 12 Dec 1950.

Mary A. Beane was born on 21 Nov 1877.  She married Ira J. Mason.

Sarah E. Beane was born in 1879.  She married John W. Hamilton.  Sarah died in 1937.

James Beane was born in 1844.

Della Beane was born on 19 Mar 1886.  She married firstly, Charles Harmon and secondly, Roy Merical.

Nancy Beane was born in 1887.

Albert “Abb” Beane was born on 8 Aug 1888.  He married Flossie Sisson, daughter of Benjamin and Lizzie Johnson in 1907. Their children are Noble, James, Ronald, Frances, Collett and Ruth Beane.
 
 
The Children of Edgar Arnold Beane and Myra C. Melton
 
1. Esther V. Beane was born on 21 May 1906 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Francis Dawson on 25 Man 1925.

2. Edythe I. Beane was born on 20 Feb 1908 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Joeseph “Joe” Henry Sawyer on 8 Aug 1941 in Kanawha County, WV.  Edythe died on 12 Jan 1980.  Joe was born on 30 Oct 1909 in Smoot, Greenbrier County, West Virginia.  He died at the age of 79 on 24 Sep 1989 and is buried in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Joe was a well-known and respected former history teacher and coach at Sissonville High School. He retired from the school after 36 years of service. The first coach at Sissonville, Sawyers started football at the school in 1935. In later years, Sawyers recalled the Indians' first football game. "I remember that I got them out early on the Ripley field to make sure they knew how to line up on a football field," he said. "Only two players (27of Sissonville's 90 male students were on the squad) had ever seen a football field." Sissonville's first team lost its opening game 20-0. But many wins followed.  Sawyers' teams won 155 contests before he retired in 1970. His 1953 team posted a record of 10 wins and no losses and was considered the best in the state by some sportswriters. Sawyers' team went 9-0. Sawyers coached Sissonville's basketball teams from 1935 to 1965.  Joe graduated from Oak Hill High School (WV) and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1934, maintaining a four-year scholarship in all sports and as captain of the variety basketball team in 1933-34.  He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Sawyers studied for nine weeks at Shrivenham (England). He was a member of the West Virginia Education Association. He served four years as combat engineer in the European Theater of World. War II. He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church at Sissonville and a charter member of the Bank of Sissonville. He served as bank director from 1976 to 1986. He was survived by his wife, Erna Sawyer, and a stepson, Gary Sawyer, and brothers Burl Sawyers of Charleston, Ray Sawyers of Hinton; one grandson; three nieces and one nephew of Charleston. Joe Sawyer Football Field at Sissonville High School is named in his honor.

3. Beatrice Genieve Beane was born on 7 Jan 1910 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married firstly, Robert Hutchinson and married secondly, Shirley Edens.

4. Mary Sidney Beane was born on 12 Dec 1912 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Burt Sawyer on 10 Sep 1938.

5. Warren Webster Beane was born on 10 Nov 1914 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Dorothy Carney on 13 Jun 1936.  Warren died on 7 Sep 1936.

6. Gertrude Elizabeth Beane was born on 15 Apr 1917 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Richard F. White on 28 Jul 1938.

7. Phyllis Jeane Beane was born on 15 Aug 1924.  She married Jesse Gandee on 4 Dec 1943.

8. Doris Leah Beane was born on 11 Jan 1929.  She married Paul Otis Bailey on 8 Sep 1950.
