The Dawson Family

The Dawson Family
 
Dawson is a name that came to England in the 11th century wave of migration that was set off by the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Dawson family lived in Westmorland (now part of Cumbria). The family was originally from Osonvilla, near Dieppe, Normandy, and it is from the local  form of this name, D'Oson, which means from Oson, that their name derives.

John R. Dawson, son of John Dawson (Abt 1720) and Susannah Wood (1722) was born Abt 1770 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He married Eleanor A. Williams (Abt 1773-Bef 1870) on 25 Jan 1789 in Bedford County, Virginia.  According to "History of Charleston and Kanawha County" by W.S. Laidley, John brought his family to Kanawha County in 1810 and first lived in Spring Hill. He then moved with his family to Sissonville about 1813. John Dawson's appraisement sale on 14 July 1855 is recorded in the Kanawha County Will Book 1, page 622 and 641. John Williams, his son-in-law, was the administrator of the estate.  Their children are:

John R. Dawson was born Abt 1770 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He married (wife unknown) on 25 Jan 1789 in Bedford County, Virginia.  John is listed in the 1810, 1820, and 1850 census for Kanawha County, Virginia and is on the 1840 Tax List for Kanawha County, Virginia.  His children were:

1. Jane “Jennie” Dawson was born in 1794 in Bedford County, Virginia.  She married James Clift on 15 May 1822 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Jennie died after 1850 in Kanawha County, VA.

2. William Dawson was born in 1797 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He married Luvina Murphy Abt 1835 in Kanawha County, Virginia. [Per Laidley, pg. 727, in a list of the children of John and Ellen (Williams) Dawson]

3. James Dawson was born in 1798 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He died Bef 1870 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  James never married.

4. Nancy Dawson was born Abt 1799 in Bedford County, Virginia.  She married Robert Craig (1794) on 15 May 1822 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Nancy died Bef 1860 in either Kanawha County, Virginia or in Ohio.

5. John Robert Dawson was born Abt 1800 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He married Nancy Libby Smith in 1821 in Bedford County, Virginia.  Their residence in 1901 is listed as Red Hill, Poca District, Kanawha Co, WV.  John Robert died Abt 1847 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  [see The Children of John Robert Dawson and Nancy Libby Smith below]

6. Manoah W. Dawson was born in 1807 in Bedford County, Virginia.  He married Rutha Fisher on 16 Apr 1827 in Kanawha County, Virginia. Manoah died in 1880 in Nicholas County, West Virginia. [see The Children of Manoah W. Dawson and Rutha Fisher below]

7. Delilah Dawson was born Abt 1809 in Bedford County, Virginia.  She married John W. Williams on 28 Mar 1827 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Delilah died 27 Sep 1880 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

8. Robert Wilson Dawson was born in 1812 in Spring Hill, Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Elizabeth Haynes in 1836.  Robert died Abt 1897 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. [see The Children of Robert Wilson Dawson and Elizabeth Haynes below]

Alexander S. Dawson was born Abt 1821 in Virginia.  He married Vanilla Kinnison on 22 Apr 1849 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Alexander died before 1860 in Kanawha County, VA.  Their children were:

1. Adeline Dawson was born in Feb 1850 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

2. Alexander Dawson was born in Jan 1853 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married firstly Mary A. Hensley on 24 Oct 1872 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and married secondly, Margaret Evelyn Mooney on 26 Dec 1878 in Putnam County, West Virginia.

3. James W. Dawson was born Abt 1855 in Kanawha County, Virginia.
 
Julia Ann Dawson was born 11 Dec 1822 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Michael Derrick (1818-1880), son of Jonathan and Mary Haynes Derrick,  on 8 Feb 1844 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Julia died on 19 Oct 1895.

Finetta Dawson was born on 13 Aug 1825 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married William Seth Rose on 18 Jan 1844 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Finetta died on 14 May 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

John “Jack” W. S. Dawson was born on 16 Mar 1827 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Susanna Dawson (b. 2 Jun 1834; d. 16 Oct 1864), daughter of Manoah W. Dawson and Rutha Fisher, on 20 May 1852 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  John is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Kanawha County, Virginia. John died on 30 Mar 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Their children were:

1. Silas M. Dawson was born in Apr 1853 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Louisa (?).

2. John W. Dawson was born in Jul 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia. He married Adaney Agnes Derrick on 15 Oct 1890 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

3. Virginia F. Dawson was born in Apr 1859 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

4. Robert McClellan Dawson was born on 6 Nov 1861 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

Mary Ann Dawson was born Abt 1830 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Ananias D. Taylor on 15 Feb 1853 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

William “Jud” Summers Dawson was born 1 Dec 1831 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married firstly, Hannah Crane, daughter of Nathaniel Crane and Eleanor Slater, on 3 Feb 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia, and married secondly, Henrietta Milam (b. Sep 1840; d. Aft 1920), daughter of James L. Milam and Rachel Miller, on 17 May 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. William is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Kanawha County, Virginia and the 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Hannah died Bef 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Jud died on 5 Apr 1911.  William and Hannah’s children were:

1. George Patrick Dawson was born in Feb 1857 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

2. Mary Louisa Dawson was born on 9 Apr 1859 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married John Gibson.

3. Child Dawson (M) was born on 21 Jan 1861 in Kanawha County, Virginia, and died on 28 Jun 1861.

4. William H. Dawson was born Abt 1863 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and died on 6 Aug 1866 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
William and Henrietta’s children were:

1. Nancy Emma Dawson was born in Mar 1867 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married General Scott Thaxton (1861) on 12 Mar 1890. 

2. Daniel S. Dawson was born in Feb 1868 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Mary Lillian Aultz (1878-1963) daughter of Francis Marion Aultz (1836-1903) and Sarah Agnes Young, on 20 Dec 1896 in Kanawha County, WV.  He is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, WV.  Daniel is identified as a School Teacher in the 1900 census and a Census Enumerator for Sissonville District in the 1910 census. 3. James Dawson was born Abt 1869 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

4. Adeline Creasy Dawson was born in Dec 1873 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married John W. Goff on 13 Jul 1892 in Kanawha County, WV.

5. Rebecca E. Dawson was born in Sep 1875 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

6. Julia A. Dawson was born in Oct 1877 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Philip A. Burdett on 4 Jan 1900 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Eleanor A. Dawson was born in 1833 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Ira Albert Humphrey on 20 Oct 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Eleanor died Bef 1900 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Delilah Dawson was born in 1836 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Doddridge Taylor on 7 Apr 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Delilah died in 1895 in West Virginia.

Adeline Dawson was born Abt 1838 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married William Henry Gibson (1833-1882) on 19 Jun 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Adeline died on 18 Nov 1869 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Henry Clay Dawson was born Abt 1841 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Lillie A. Smith (Abt 1844), daughter of Benjamin Smith and Delilah Craig, on 2 Mar 1864 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Henry is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Kanawha County, Virginia.  Henry died Bef 1870 in Kanawha County, WV.

Eleanor “Ella” Dawson was born in 1830.  She married William Crane on 17 May 1830.  Ella died Abt 1901.

Susanna Dawson was born on 2 Jun 1834.  She married John W. Dawson, son of John and Libby Smith Dawson on 20 May 1852. Susanna died on 16 Oct 1864.

Manoah “Frank” Dawson was born in 1838.  He married Martha Scott.

Sarah Dawson was born in 1839.  She married Stewart Miller.  Sarah died 13 Jun 1916.

Robert C. “Squire Bob” Dawson was born on 7 July 1841.  He married Anastatia Haynes on 25 Jan 1866. Bob died on 10 July 1903.  Their children were:

1. Sevenia Dawson was born on 28 Jul 1867 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Thomas Christopher.  Sevenia died in 1951.

2. Forzina Florence Dawson was born on 16 Aug 1869 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married R. S. Milam.

3. Ida Parthenia Dawson was born on 11 Nov 1870 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married Perry Gibson. Ida died in 1943.

4. Edgar Ulysses Dawson was born on 17 Sep 1860 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

5. Clarence Columbus Dawson was born 3 Oct 1874 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Louisa V. Jackson.  Clarence died on 10 July 1951.

6. Herman Hayes Dawson was born on 28 Nov 1876 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Jeanie Bailes.

7. Louverna Dawson was born on 20 Aug 1870 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Louverna died on 1 Sep 1880.

8. Roscoe C. Dawson was born on 14 Dec 1881 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Roscoe died in 1885.

9. Lena Leota Dawson was born on 28 Jan 1885 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Lena died on 11 Jan 1886.

He married firstly, Lucinda Scrobaugh and married secondly, Julia Ann Jones on 6 Apr 1896 in Kanawha County, WV.  John is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Kanawha County, Virginia, and in the 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910 and 1920 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  John and Lucinda’s children were:

1. James W. Dawson was born in Jun 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Mary Margaret Cummings on 15 Jan 1895 in Kanawha County, WV.

2. Mary E. Dawson was born in Jul 1868 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Daniel Webster Harpold on 23 Aug 1889 in Jackson County, West Virginia.

3. Robert W. Dawson was born in Mar 1871 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Fanny L. Scott (1876) on 11 Sep 1892 in Kanawha County, WV.
 
Noah Wesley Dawson was born on 24 Dec 1841 in Poca District, Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Virginia Holt, daughter of John Holt and Mary Thomas on 8 Jul 1889 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Noah is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Kanawha County, Virginia, and in the 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1910 census for Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Noah and Virginia’s children were:

Vincent Heenon Dawson was born Abt 1860 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Margaret Elizabeth Willis on 27 Nov 1889 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and married, secondly, Nona Whittington after 1898.  Vincent is listed in the 1870 and 1880 Census for Poca District, Kanawha County, WV.   Vincent and Margaret’s children were:

1. Nellie Dawson was born and died on 18 Jun 1890 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

2. Ethel Elizabeth Dawson was born on 19 May 1891 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Curtis Withrow.  Ethel died on 17 Dec 1966.

3. Macel May Dawson was born on 23 Apr 1894 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married Enoch Attison Bailey on 9 Jun 1913 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Macel died on 29 Sep 1979 in Florida.

4. Josie Ellen Dawson was born on 7 Aug 1896 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and died on 1 Dec 1897.

5. Edith Jane Dawson was born on 9 Nov 1898 and died on 6 Feb 1900 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Daniel Boone Dawson was born on 12 Aug 1897 in Sissonville, Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia. He married Elizabeth Cyde Brown (1903-1966).  They had one daughter, Ann Catherine Dawson.  Boone Dawson was the Mayor of Charleston, WV from 1935 to 1947 during which time he was credited with building the Kanawha Boulevard, the Municipal Auditorium, the South Side Bridge, the Lee Street Bridge, and Littlepage Terrace.  Former Mayor John Shanklin, a close friend of Boone’s, said Dawson’s tenure represented the most productive years in Charleston’s history.  “He was a quiet but energetic man who had a peculiar success in winning people to his side,” Shanklin said. Boone was also involved in WV politics, running as the Republican candidate for governor of the state in 1940 and 1944 and he served several times as a delegate to the Republican national convention.  Gov. Moore said Dawson was an old friend and a tireless public servant. But more than that, said Moore, " He was a good neighbor, a concerned citizen who felt that it was everyone's responsibility to contribute to the good of the community. He was a man of unflinching and unwavering honor and intergrity.” Daniel Boone Dawson died on 15 Sept 1975 following an illness at home.

Grace Dawson was born in Dec 1899 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. She married a Clinton. Grace died in 1997.

Francis Leomi Dawson was born Abt 1902 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Esther Virginia Beane(1906).  Francis died in 1989 and Esther died in 1995. Their children were:

1. JoAnn Dawson married Arthur “Art” Fowler.

2. Robert “Bob” Beane Dawson was born on 2 Aug 1929 in Sissonville, Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia, on the farm that had been in his family since 1805.  He married Kathryn Jane “Kitty” Johnson (1929-2004).  He and his wife both taught at Sissonville High School for several years.  “Coach” Dawson was a legendary sports star at both Sissonville High School and Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston. He was a member of the MHC/UC Sports Hall of Fame. As a member of the Golden Eagle undefeated football team of 1951, he led the nation in punting, which included a 90-yard and 81-yard punt. He is also acknowledged as one of the greatest baseball pitchers in school history. A poll of coaches, athletic directors, and sports writers naming an all-time WV conference team, Mr. Dawson was selected as the most outstanding right-handed pitcher who ever pitched in the West Virginia Conference. He taught and coached multiple subjects and sports for over 30 years at Sissonville High School. He will be remembered for instilling in his students and athletes’ self-confidence, self-esteem and self-discipline.  Following retirement from teaching and coaching, he returned to the "Dawson" farm where he developed a significant purebred Hereford cattle herd. He was named "Farmer of the Year" by the WV Department of Agriculture. He also developed a reputation as an after-dinner banquet speaker.   Bob Dawson died on 6 Jul 2016 at the age of 86 and is buried in Floral Hills Garden of Memories Cemetery in Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia. Ora Dawson was born Abt 1904 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married a Trent.  Ora died in 1983.

Lillian Dawson was born in 1906 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and died in 1908.

Erna Agnes Dawson was born Abt 1900 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and died in 2001.

Rank Orion Dawson was born Abt 1910 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Dr Dawson died in 2004.

Winfred Summers Dawson was born Abt 1913 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Rev Dawson died in 1997.

John Curtis Dawson was born Abt 1917 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  John died in 1993.

Helen Katheryn Dawson was born in 1919 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. She married a Sanders.  Helen died in 2021.
