The Johnson Family

Johnson is a 
surname of English and Scottish origin. It is a patronymic name meaning “son of John”. The name John derives from Latin Johannes, which is derived through Greek Ἰωάννης Iōannēs from Hebrew יוחנן ‎ Yohanan, meaning "Yahweh has favoured". The Johnson surname is associated with the house of FitzJohn in Normandy, particularly that of one of the leading branches and oldest, the Johnsons of Ayscough-Fee.

Uctred (Huctred) "of Tynedale" Fitz Waltheof
was born after 1070 in Tynedale, Scotland.  He was the son of Waltheof (Huntington) of Northumberland and Judith (Lens) of Lens.  Uctred was the brother of Maud (Huntingdon) of Scotland, Judith Huntingdon and Adelise (Huntingdon) de Tony and the husband of Bethóc (Dunkeld) Nithsdale whom he married in 1120 in Northumberland, England.  Uctred was the father Hextilda Fitz Uchtred (Tynedale) de Comyn, John Fitz Uchtred and Robert Fitz Uchtred.  Uctred died in 1152 before age 82 in Johnstone, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. 

John Fitz Uchtred was born in 1125 in Scotland.  He was the son Uctred Fitz Waltheof and Bethóc (Dunkeld) Nithsdale and brother of Hextilda Fitz Uchtred (Tynedale) de Comyn and Robert Fitz Uchtred. John is the father of John Johnstone and Gilbert (De Johnston) Johnston.  John Fitz Uchtred died in 1180 at about age 55 in Scotland. 

John Johnstone (Johnston) was born about 1170 in Scotland.  He was the son of John Fitz Uchtred and the brother of Gilbert (De Johnston) Johnston and the father of Gilbert Johnstone.  John died about 1194 at about age 24 in Scotland. 

Gilbert Johnstone was born about 1170 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of John Johnstone and the father of Thomas (Johnston) Johnston of Whitriggs and Gilbert Johnston.  Gilbert died about 1240 at about age 70 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Gilbert Johnston was born about 1249 in Scotland.  He was the son of Gilbert Johnstone and the father of Adam Johnston.  Gilbert died about 1320 at about age 71 in Scotland.

Adam Johnston was born about 1270 in Scotland.  He was the son of Gilbert Johnston and the father of Adam Johnston (1330-1346).  Adam Sr. died about 1351 at about age 81 in Scotland.

Adam Johnston was born in 1330 in Scotland.  He was the father John (Johnstone) Johnstone of Annandale and Stephen (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben.  Adam died on 17 Oct 1346 at about age 16 in Durham, Durham, England.

Stephen Johnston of Caskieben, formerly Johnston, was born about 1350 in Tynedale, Midlothian, Scotland.  He was the son of Adam Johnston and brother to John (Johnstone) Johnstone of Annandale.  Stephen married Margaret (De Garviach) de Johnston in 1380 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Stephen was the father John (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben.  Stephen died about 1390 at about age 40 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Note: Stephen (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben is a member of Clan Johnstone.  Stephen de Johnston, who lived in the reign of king David Bruce, was the first member of this family. Stephen is said to have been a brother of the laird of Johnston in Annandale. He was a man of learning who retired to the north from troubles in his own country and became principal secretary to Thomas, Earl of Mar.  Stephen de Johnston married Margaret, daughter and heiress of Sir Andrew Garrioch of Caskieben, with whom he received a considerable estate in Aberdeenshire, including the lands of Caskieben, Crimond, Cordyce, and others. He also received the lands of Kinbrown, which he called Johnston after his own name. Caskieben became the chief title of the family.  Johnston of Caskieben is one of the most ancient families of the name of Johnston and have always competed with the Johnstons of Annandale for the chiefship. They have long been designated "Of That Ilk"; which generally denotes head or chief of a clan.

Alexander Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, formerly Johnston, was born in 1434 in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of Gilbert (De Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben and Elene Lichton.  Alexander was the brother of Gilbert De Johnston, Gilbert Johnston [half], Alexander Johnston [half], William (Johnston) Johnston of Crimond [half], Agnes Johnston [half] and John Johnston.  Alexander married Agnes Gloster in Scotland. They were the parents of William Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben.  Alexander died in 1508 at about age 74 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

William Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, formerly Johnston, was born in 1467 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of Alexander (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben and Agnes (Gloster) Johnston.  William married Margaret (Lumsden) before 1513.  They were the parents of James (Johnston) Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, Margaret Johnston, Christian Johnston, George Johnston, Gilbert Johnston, William Johnston, Janet Johnston and Isabel Johston.  William died about 1513 at about the age of 46 in Flodden, Northumberland, England. Note: William (Johnston) Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben is a member of Clan Johnstone. William was born about 1467, the son of Alexander Johnston and Agnes Gloster. He married firstly, Margaret Meldrum and they had a son, James, and a daughter, Margaret. William married secondly, Margaret Lumsden, and they had a son, Gilbert, and daughters, Christian and Margaret.

James Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, formerly Johnston, was born about 1481 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of William (Johnston) Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben and Margaret (Meldrum) Johnston.  James was the brother of Margaret Johnston, Christian Johnston, Gilbert Johnston [half], George Johnston, William Johnston, Janet Johnston and Isabel Johnston.  James married Clara Barclay on 6 Sep 1521 in Scotland.  They are the parents of Alexander Johnston, Margaret Johnston, James Johnston, William Johnston, Janet Johnston, Gilbert (Johnston) Johnston of Standingstones, Agnes Johnston, Isabel Johnston, Bessie Johnston and George Johnston.  James died in 1548 at about age 67 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Sir William Johnston of that Ilk was born in 1520 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of James Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben and Clara (Barclay) Johnston.  Sir William was the brother of Alexander Johnston [half], Margaret Johnston, James Johnston, Janet Johnston, Gilbert (Johnston) Johnston of Standingstones, Agnes Johnston, Isabel Johnston, George Johnston and Bessie Johnston.  Sir William married Margaret Hay.  Sir William died on 10 Sep 1547 at about age 27 in Pinkie Cleugh, Edinburghshire, Scotland.  Note: William Johnston, Younger of that Ilk was the eldest son of James Johnston and Clara Barclay. He married Margaret Hay, daughter of Alexander Hay of Delgaty and had four children. William Johnston died at the Battle of Pinkie on 10 September 1547, during the lifetime of his father.  William and Margaret had four children: George Johnston, Bessie Johnston (m. Gilbert Hay of Perkak), Margaret Johnston (m. James Johnston) and Violet Johnston (m. Patrick Chalmers, merchant in Banff).

George Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, formerly Johnston, was born in 1544 in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of William Johnston and Margaret Hay.  George was brother to Janet de Johnston, Gilbert de Johnston, James Johnson [half], Agnes de Johnston, John Johnston [half], Violet Johnston, Bessie Johnston, Margaret Johnston and Isabel Johnston.  George married Christian (Forbes) Johnston, daughter of William Forbes, 7th Lord Forbes and Elizabeth Keith, in 1570 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  They were the parents of John (Johnston) Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, Margaret Johnston (Skene), Gilbert Johnston, George Johnston, Thomas Johnston, Isabel Johnston (Blackburn), Agnes Johnston of Caskieben later Crimond, Janet Johnston (Gibsone), Elizabeth Johnston, Barbara Johnston, Arthur Johnston, Helen Johnston, William Johnston and Jean Johnston.  George died in 1593 at about age 49 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

John Johnston was born about 1565 in Caskiebein, Craig, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  He was the son of George (Johnston) Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben and Christian (Forbes) Johnston.  John is brother to Margaret (Johnston) Skene, Gilbert Johnston, George Johnston, Margaret Johnston [half], Thomas Johnston, Isabel (Johnston) Blackburn, Agnes (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben later Crimond, Janet (Johnston) Gibsone, Elizabeth Johnston, Barbara Johnston, Arthur Johnston, William Johnston, Helen Johnston and Jean Johnston.  John married Janet (Turing) Johnston about 1590 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and secondly, Katherine (Lundin) Johnston about 1597 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  John was the father of George (Johnston) Johnston of Caskieben 1st Baronett, John Johnston, Christian (Johnston) Forbes and Thomas Johnston.  John Johnston died on 4 Feb 1613 at about age 48 in Monkegy, Kirk, Scotland.

Thomas "of Craig" Johnston was born in 1598 in Craig, Aberdeen, Scotland.  He was the son of John Johnston and Caskieben and Katherine (Lundin) Johnston.  Thomas was a brother George Johnston of Caskieben 1st Baronet [half], John Johnston [half] and Christian (Johnston) Forbes [half].  Thomas married Mary (Irvine) Johnston about 1646 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Thomas and Katherine are the parents of Margaret Johnston, Elizabeth (Johnston) Leith, William Johnston, John (Johnston) Johnston of Bishopstown, Anna Johnston, Barbara Johnston and James Johnston.  Thomas died on 1 Aug 1656 at about age 58 in Dyce, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Note: Thomas Johnston is a member of Clan Johnstone. Thomas Johnson of Craig was born circa 1598 in Craig, Aberdeen, Scotland. He died in August 1656 in Dyce, Scotland. Thomas was the son of John Johnston of John Johnston of Caskieben and Katherine Lundie.  Thomas was the half-brother of Sir George Johnston of Caskieben, 1st Baronet. He held the office of Sheriff Depute of Aberdeenshire. He lived at Craig, Scotland.  Thomas married first Elspeth Strachan, they had with "other Issue" 3 daughters "1, Margaret, wife of John Johnston of Newplace, and mother of Sir John Johnston, 4th baronet; 2, Elizabeth, married, in 1652, to Alexander Leith of Bucharne, nicknamed “Hardhead”; 3, Isobel, married, in 1654, to Robert, son of Mr. John Cheyne, parson of Kintore."  Thomas married second, Mary Irvine, the daughter of Alexander Irvine of Kingcausie. They had 4 sons. The children of Mary Irvine and Thomas Johnston are William Johnston (d. 1716); John Johnston (b. 1649, d. 1716); Anna Johnston (b. 1652); Barbara Johnston (b. 1654); James Johnston (b. 1656).

James Johnston was born on 20 Jul 1656 in Dyce, Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of Thomas Johnston and Mary Irvine.  He was a brother to Margaret Johnston [half], Elizabeth (Johnston) Leith [half], William Johnston, John Johnston of Bishopstown, Anna Johnston and Barbara Johnston.  James married Faith Leith about 1673 in Aberdeen, Scotland.  They were the parents of James Johnston, William Johnston and Benjamin Johnston.  James died after 1703 at the age 46 in Pamunkey Neck, King William County, Virginia.  James Johnston was christened on July 20, 1656 in Dyce, Aberdeen, Scotland.  Note: Faith Leith, daughter of John Leith and Margery Forbes.[5] John Leith was the son of Laurence Leith. Margery was the granddaughter of Laird Alexander “The Red Laird” Forbes 5th Of Pitsligo.  John Leif's family connections include other Olgivy’s and Johnston’s. James Johnston arrived in New Kent Co. Va. in St. Peter's Parish by Apr. 1700 as a headright for Geo. Alves on Totopotomoy's Creek. In Apr. 1702 he acquired, after a two-year indenture, a small 110-acre plantation, "Pamunkey Neck". This tract was, "Part of land laid out according to articles of peace for the Pamunkey Indians, who at a Gen. Court 22 Oct. 1701 relinquished their right."  This area was in a part of King William Co. Va. that had been a part of King and Queen Co. Va. which earlier was New Kent Co. Va. He seems to have conveyed 70 acres of this parcel. "James Johnson, 40 ac., King William Co. Va., in Pamunkey Neck...whereon sd. Johnson liveth, 23 Oct. 1703, part of land according to peace agreement with Pamunkey Indians." See, "Cavaliers And Pioneers", 1695-1732, by Nugent.

William Johnston (Johnson) was born about 1676 in Aberdeen, Scotland.  His father is James Johnston.  William was a brother to James Johnston and Benjamin Johnston.  William married Sarah Penelope Massie.  Their children are William Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Collins Johnson, Cicely Johnson and Nancy Ann Johnson (Ballard).  William died on 6 Nov 1712 at about the age of 36 in New Kent County, Colony of Virginia.

William Johnston (Johnson) was born in 1701 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia Colony.  The son of William Johnson and Sarah Penelope Massie, and a brother to Benjamin Johnson, Collins Johnson, Cicely Johnson and Nancy Ann (Johnson) Ballard, he married Ann Chew in 1723 in and married secondly, Elizabeth Wyatt before 13 May in Caroline County, Colony of Virginia.  William died 20 Mar 1769 at about age 68 in Port Royal, Caroline, Colony of Virginia, British Colonial America.  William and Ann’s children are Judith Johnson (Farish), Richard Johnston, Larkin Chew Johnston, Robert Johnston, Elizabeth Johnson (Benger), Benjamin Johnston, Hannah Johnson (Coleman), James Johnston, Philip Johnston and Frances Johnson (Forsyth).  William died on 20 Mar 1769 at about age 68 in Port Royal, Caroline, Colony of Virginia, British Colonial America.

James Johnston was born in 1736 in Spotsylvania, Colony of Virginia, British Colonial America.  The son of William Johnson and Ann Chew, and a brother to Judith (Johnson) Farish, Richard (Johnson) Johnston, Larkin Chew (Johnson) Johnston, Robert Johnston, Elizabeth (Johnson) Benger, Benjamin Johnston, Hannah (Johnson) Coleman, Philip Johnston [half] and Frances (Johnson) Forsyth [half], he married Mary Ware.  James Johnston died in 1820 at about age 84 in Virginia.  James and Mary’s children are William Johnson, William Edward Johnson and James William Johnson.

William Edward Johnson was born in 1755 in Eastern Shore of Virginia.  He married Amy Nelson (1757) on 25 Dec 1837, Fayette County, Virginia) Abt 1775.  William died on 22 Dec 1805 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Their children are:

William Edward Johnson, Jr. was born on 16 Dec 1793 in Lick Run, Greenbrier County, Virginia.  He married Nancy Ann Sims (b.1793 in Culpepper County, Virginia; d. circa 1860 in Poca District, Kanawha County, Virginia), daughter of James Sims (1854-Abt 1838) and Nancy Cotton, on 18 Oct 1818 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  William was the brother of Rev John Brown Johnson, Sr.; James M. Johnson; Mary Polly Darlington; Amy Johnson; Elizabeth Johnson; Nelson Johnson and Nancy Johnson.  Nancy was the sister of William Sims, Sr.; Elizabeth Sims; John Sims; Jeremiah Sims; Mary Sims; and half-sister Mildrid "Milly" Sims; George Washington Simms; James Sims; Margaret Sims; Sarah Sims; Jane L Sims and Dryden Sims.  William died on 18 Dec 1845 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  William is buried in Robson, Fayette County, WV.  Their children are:

Huldah Ingram Johnson was born in 1817 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  She married Robert Ingram.   Huldah died on 4 Mar 1898 in Fayette County, West Virginia.  Huldah and Robert’s children are William Preston Ingram; Nancy Margaret Ingram; Vincent Ingram; Irvin Lewis Ingram; Annie Ingram; Mary E. Ingram Blake; Elizabeth Wills; Richard Edward Ingram and Amy Ingram.

2. Joseph Nelson Johnson was born in 1817 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  He married Elizabeth (?).  Joseph died in 1855 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Joseph and Elizabeth’s children are Irvine Lewis Johnson and Nancy Johnson (Cunningham).

3. Alexander Johnson was born on 10 Jun 1819 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  He married Isabella Hughes (Abt 1826).  Alexander died on 8 Apr 1887 in Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia. 

4. Mary Ann Johnson was born on 20 Aug 1821 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  She married David Alexander Miller (1820-1871) on 13 Dec 1839 in Fayette County, Virginia.  Mary died on 4 Mar 1898 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Mary and David’s children are Vienna Miller; William R Miller; James Alexander Miller; Margaret Wilmuth Miller; Anna Eliza Jordan; Silas Marion Miller; Irvin Irving Miller; Mary E Miller and Joseph Miller. 

5. John Brown Johnson was born on 23 Dec 1823 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  He died on 30 July 1902 in Clifton Forge, Virginia. 

6. Lewis Dickinson Johnson was born on 6 Mar 1828 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  Lewis died on 31 Aug 1845 in Fayette County, Virginia. 

7. Elizabeth Johnson was born in 1829 in Loup Creek, Fayette County, Virginia.  Elizabeth died in 1833 in Fayette County, Virginia. 

8. William Hunter Johnson was born on 27 Jul 1832 in Nicholas County, Virginia.  He married Louisa Luvenia Samuels (b. 6 Nov 1839 in Kanawha County, VA; d. 12 Jun 1884), daughter of John Greenberry Samuels (1814–1888) and Nancy Emeline Lacy (b. 1819, Madison, AL; d. 3 Nov 1891 in Kanawha County, WV) on 26Oct 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  William married secondly, Mary Frances Kiser (1847-1937) in 1889.  1847–1937 (m. 1889).  William died on 8 Jan 1899 at the age of 66.  Louisa (died at age 44) and William are both buried in the Albert E. Humphreys Memorial Cemetery, Sissonville, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Note:  Louisa’ siblings are Caleb Greenberry Samuels (1842–1917), Mary Emma Samuels Pritt (1849–1924), Juliann Esther Samuels Archibald (1851–1931), Rebecca Henrietta Samuels Good (1855–1936) and James Frye Samuels (1859–1935).  [see The Children of William Hunter Johnson and Louisa Lavinia Samuels below] 

9. Nancy D. Johnson was born in Aug 1835 in Virginia.  She married William B. Martin (1831-Aft 1920), son of Dioclesian C. Martin (1807-1878) and Catherine Kidd (1812-1886), on 7 Sep 1853 in Poca District, Kanawha County, Virginia.  Nancy died on 1 Dec 1915 in Poca District, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  [see The Children of Nancy D. 10. Morris Houston Johnson was born on 21 Jan 1839 in Fayette County, Virginia.  Morris died on 11 Aug 1845 in Fayette County, VA. 

Amy Johnson was born Abt 1796 in Nicholas County, Virginia.  She married Turley Foster (Abt 1794) on 18 Nov 1815 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Amy died on 28 Dec 1859 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

Clarissa A. Martin was born on 13 Jun 1854 in Poca District, Kanawha County, Virginia.  She married George Reese on 6 Jan 1870 in Kanawha County, WV.

Nancy Catherine Martin was born in May 1857.  She married Rev. John Newton Burgess (1856-1935) on 14 Dec 1881 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  They are the great grandparents of Travis Franklin Baldwin and Nancy Margaret Baldwin.  Their grandmother is Icy Lura Burgess, who married John Franklin Robinson.  Travis and Nancy’s mother is Lura Colleen Robinson who married Arthur Herman Baldwin.

Icy Binda Martin was born on 6 Dec 1859 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

William S. L. Martin was born Abt 1864 in Kanawha County, Virginia and died on 12 Aug 1866 at the approximate age of 2 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

Charles W. Martin was born Abt Aug 1865 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and died in Feb 1867 at the approximate age of 1 ½ in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Wilbur Martin was born Abt Nov 1866 in Kanawha County, West Virginia and died on 21 Mar 1868 at the approximate age of 1 yr. and 4 mo. in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Mary S. Martin was born in Nov 1868 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  She married John F. Fisher (1865-1932) on 26 Feb 1855 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Mary died Bef 1910.

Clark H. Martin was born in Jun 1871 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Laura Ann Miller (1871-1954) on 24 Sep 1892 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Clark is buried in Humphrey’s Memorial Cemetery, Sissonville, Poca District, Kanawha County, WV.

John A. Martin was born in May 1873 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He married Susan Cavender (1875) on 23 Oct 1895 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  John is buried in Humphrey’s Memorial Cemetery, Sissonville, Poca District, Kanawha County, WV.
