The Samuels Family

The Samuels Family

The surname Samuels is of Hebrew origin and is believed to derive from the given name Shmuel, meaning “heard by God” or “God has heard.”  Samuels is a patronymic surname, indicating it is based on the name of an ancestor or father, with the addition of the suffix “-s” denoting “son of.” It is a relatively common Jewish surname, especially among Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern European origin. During medieval times, Jewish individuals often adopted surnames based on their fathers’ given names, so the surname Samuels could be an indicator of a family’s lineage.

Joseph Humphrey Samuels was born Abt Jul 1662 in Llangelynin, Merionethshire, Wales.  Joseph died on 15 Sep 1693 at about age 31 in Philadelphia, Province of Pennsylvania. He was the father of Joseph Humphrey Samuels, Jr.

Joseph Humphrey Samuels, Jr. was born Abt 1693 in Radnor, Chester, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America.  He died on 28 Mar 1753 at about age 60 in Plymouth, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America.  Joseph Jr. was the father of Shadrack, Mary, and Mesech Samuels.

Shadrack Samuels was born about 1738 in Upper Saucon Twsp., Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Colonial America and died in 1784 at about age 46 in Mount Gilead, Loudon County, Virginia. He married Martha Anne Dehaven who was born Abt 1741 in Philadelphia, Province of Pennsylvania. Martha was the daughter of Abraham DeHaven and Rebecca D
Witt Pawling. Martha died about 1800 at about age 59 in Shenandoah, Virginia.  They were the parents of Samuel Greenbury Samuels.

Note: “At an Orphan's Court held at Philadelphia for the City and County of Philadelphia the Eleventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty-eight before William Coleman, Alexander Stedman, Jacob Duche and Isaac Jones Esquires. Justices of the same court. Shadrach Samuels, Mary Samuels and Mesech Samuels: children of Joseph Samuels late of Plimouth Township yeoman deceased came into Court and being of age sufficient to these guardians prayed that Barnabas Coulston of Plimouth Township aforesaid might be appointed their guardian whereupon the Court in compliance with the said Prayer and according to an Act of Assembly of this Province instituted an Act for establishing Orphans Court do appoint the said Barnabas Coulston guardian to the said Shadrach Samuels, Mary Samuels and Mesech Samuels vested with all the Power and Authorities to the said office of guardian belonging or in any wise appertaining.” [Orphans' Courts had been established in the 17th century to protect the rights of minor children (under age 21) whose fathers had died. Proceedings usually dealt with the administration of estates, or disputes over estates. The children named were not necessarily orphans in the sense that both parents were deceased-although since women could not own property the survival of the mother was immaterial. Guardians were generally assigned to oversee and safeguard the inheritances of minors.] Source: Orphans Court - Philadelphia, Pa 1757-1761 Book 5, page 47, 11 March 1758, Film #21844.)
