The Sleght / Slack Family

The Sleght / Slack Family 

Heynderick Cornelissen Sleght was born in 1642 in Woerden, Zuid- Holland.  At the age of 10, he emigrated with his parents, Cornelis Barentsz Slecht and Trijntgen Tijsz Bosch, to live in New Amsterdam (now New York).  He married Elsje Barentse Lieveling on 8 Aug 1666 in Kingston, Ulster, (NY). He was the father of Barent Hendricksen Sleght, Cornelius Hendricksen Sleght, Johannes Hendricksen Sleght, Abraham Hendricksen Sleght, and Anna Cathrijn Sleght.  Heynderick died at the age of 48 on 23 Sep 1690 in Flatbush, Kings, (NY).

Cornelius Hendricksen Sleght was born in 1676 in Brooklyn, Kings County (NY) and married Dorothy Hunter on 11 Apr 1696 in Brooklyn, Kings County, (NY).  The children of the couple were Engeltje Slack, Hendrick Cornelius Slack, James Slack, Benjamin Slack, John Slack and Abraham Slack.  Cornelius died about 1746 at about age 70 in Maidenhead, Hunterdon, (NJ).

John Slack, Sr. was born before 14 Apr 1715 in Maidenhead, Hunterdon (NJ).  He married Jane Winder in 1741 in Lawrenceville, Mercer, (NJ).  Their children were Elizabeth Slack, Cornelius Benjamin Slack, Joseph Slack, Timothy Slack, Noah Slack and John Slack.  John Slack, Sr. died before Oct 1785 at about age 70 in Lower Makefield, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

Noah Slack was born about 1750 in Lower Makefield Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania.  He married Rachel Hellings Baker in 1770 in Somerset, Pennsylvania.  Their children were Benjamin Slack, Esther Slack, James Slack, Elizabeth Slack and Elijah Slack.  Noah died about 1792 at about age 42 in Lower Makefield Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

Esther Slack was born 12 Mar 1784 in Lower Wakefield, Bucks, Pennsylvania.  She married Samuel Greenbury Samuels on 4 Mar 1800 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  Their children were Martha Patsy Samuels, Sarah Catherine Samuels, Mary Samuels, Nancy M. Samuels, Rachael Samuels, John Greenbury Samuels, Esther Samuels, Emily Ann Samuels and Rebecca Samuels.  Esther died in 1850 at about age 65 in Guthrie, Kanawha, Virginia.

1. Martha Patsy Samuels (b. 29 Oct 1803 in Kanawha County, Virginia; d. 7 Mar 1892 at age 88 in Kanawha County, West Virginia) married Adam B. Aultz, Jr.

2. Sara Catherine Samuels (b. 6 Dec 1804 in Sissonville, Kanawha, Virginia; d. 23 Oct 1882 at age 77 in Independence, Arkansas) married Edward R. Fife in 1820 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  

3. Mary “Polly” Samuels (b. 17 Jun 1806 in Sissonville, Kanawha, Virginia; d. 1880 at about age 73 in Guthrie, Kanawha, West Virginia) married David Shirkey.

4. Nancy M. Samuels (b. 14 Oct 1809 in Guthrie, Kanawha, Virginia; d. 23 Oct 1882 at age 73 in Guthrie, Kanawha, West Virginia) married Benjamin McClanahan 5 Jan 1828 in Kanawha, Virginia.     
           
5. Rachael Samuels (b. 4 Sep 1812 in Kanawha, Virginia; d. 29 Jan 1898 at age 85 in Kanawha, West Virginia) married Edmond Newhouse 29 Sep 1831 in Kanawha, Virginia.  

6. John Greenbury Samuels (b.  18 Dec 1814 in Kanawha, Virginia; d. about 10 Mar 1888 at about age 73 in Kanawha, West Virginia) married Nancy Emeline Lacy 27 Apr 1839.

7. Esther Samuels (b. 22 Aug 1817 in Kanawha, Virginia; d. unknown)       
                    
8. Emily Ann Samuels (b. 29 Jun 1819 in Sissonville, Kanawha County, Virginia; d. 1903 at about age 83 in Sissonville, Kanawha, West Virginia) married John Anderson Burgess 27 Dec 1838 in Sissonville, Kanawha County, Virginia. [Emily Samuels and John Burgess are the great, great grandparents of Travis Franklin Baldwin]

9. Rebecca Samuels (b. 22 Feb 1822 in Sissonville, Kanawha, Virginia; d.  23 Apr 1880 at age 58 in Sissonville, Kanawha County, West Virginia) married Henry Cartmill Sisson, Sr.   28 Jan 1838 in Sissonville, Poca Dist., Kanawha County, Virginia.   She was buried at the Humphreys' Memorial Church Cemetery, Kanawha, Sissonville, West Virginia.
