The Wallace Family
There are two theories for the origin of the Wallace name, both of which indicate an ancient British origin. First, the name of Waleis was common in England and around 1300 meant simply “Welsh-man”. The family was believed to be from Wales and held land in Shropshire and who may have come north with King David I. The second theory is that they were Britons who settled in the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde, having been driven north in the tenth century.
William Wallace was born Abt 1765 in Scotland. He married Elizabeth (Unknown) Wallace (Bef 1779 in Scotland). William is listed in the 1810 census for Kanawha County, Virginia. Their children were:

2. Mary Wallace was born Abt 1808 in Botetourt County, Virginia. She married William Pleasant Lanham (1801-Abt 1886), the son of William and Mary Lanham, on 5 Nov 1856 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

2. George S. Wallace was born on 20 Aug 1854 in Kanawha County, Virginia. He married Ann Lanham (Abt 1857) on 7 Mar 1878 in Putnam County, Virginia. Charleston, W. Va., August 17
A storeroom in Wallace and Kelley's hotel in West Charleston, caught fire this morning at 3 o'clock. Both buildings and contents were consumed. Few household effects were saved from the hotel building. Simon Wallace and his mother, Mrs. Rachel Wallace, who were sleeping in the rooms over the store, where they and Mr. Kelley and family made their homes, perished in the flames. The bodies were so charred that it was almost impossible to recognize them as human beings. Mr. Kelley and wife were absent visiting friends in Putnam County when the fire occurred. The fire is believed to be of incendiary origin, beginning near the ground in the rear of the store. A large crowd was out long before the building was consumed. Had it been known that anyone was inside they could have been rescued with little difficulty.
It is reported that $800 in money was in the building, and robbery was at the bottom of the whole affair. The loss on the two buildings and contents in about $2000 each.
Mr. Wallace was a popular young man, thirty-one years of age, and came here from Poca District four years ago. There are a number of stories afloat of a conflicting nature. All indications point to a terrible crime, and startling developments are expected at an early date.

Last night W. H. Givens was arrested and lodged in jail here on the charge of being one of the alleged murderers of Rachel Wallace and her son, Simon, the burning of Wallace and Kelley's [Hotel] on the morning of Argust 17th [1888]. Given is said to be the father of Gus Higginbotham, whose husband is now in jail on the charge of the [same] murder. It is rumored that Min Bedley had made a full confession of the whole affair.

Charleston, W. Va., August 17
A storeroom in Wallace and Kelley's hotel in West Charleston, caught fire this morning at 3 o'clock. Both buildings and contents were consumed. Few household effects were saved from the hotel building. Simon Wallace and his mother, Mrs. Rachel Wallace, who were sleeping in the rooms over the store, where they and Mr. Kelley and family made their homes, perished in the flames. The bodies were so charred that it was almost impossible to recognize them as human beings. Mr. Kelley and wife were absent visiting friends in Putnam County when the fire occurred. The fire is believed to be of incendiary origin, beginning near the ground in the rear of the store. A large crowd was out long before the building was consumed. Had it been known that anyone was inside they could have been rescued with little difficulty.
It is reported that $800 in money was in the building, and robbery was at the bottom of the whole affair. The loss on the two buildings and contents in about $2000 each.
Mr. Wallace was a popular young man, thirty-one years of age, and came here from Poca District four years ago. There are a number of stories afloat of a conflicting nature. All indications point to a terrible crime, and startling developments are expected at an early date.

Last night W. H. Givens was arrested and lodged in jail here on the charge of being one of the alleged murderers of Rachel Wallace and her son, Simon, the burning of Wallace and Kelley's [Hotel] on the morning of Argust 17th [1888]. Given is said to be the father of Gus Higginbotham, whose husband is now in jail on the charge of the [same] murder. It is rumored that Min Bedley had made a full confession of the whole affair.
