The Whittington Family

William C. Whittington, son of Thomas Whittington, was born Abt 1815 in Bedford County, Virginia.  At the age of 20, he married 18-year-old Lucinda Wiley (b. Abt 1822 in Bedford County, Virginia) on 26 Jun 1835.  They arrived in Kanawha County, Virginia before 1838.  In 1855, Kanawha County records indicate that William purchased 130 acres of land on the waters of Tuppers Creek and Two-Mile Creek, part of a 1,000-acre tract of land that had been granted to Henry Banks. The area was later known as “Whittington’s Divide”, which separates the waters of Two-Mile and Tupper’s creeks. William and Lucinda are listed in the 1860 (he as a 40-year-old laborer), 1870 and 1880 census for Union District, Kanawha County, Virginia/West Virginia. They had one son, James B. Whittington.  William C. Whittington died in 1881.

1. James B. Whittington was born in Mar 1838 in Kanawha County, Virginia.  He married Margaret Fenton Fielder (1850-1926) of Fayette County, the daughter of Fenton J. and Magaret B. Fielder, on 3 Aug 1863 in Kanawha County, Virginia in a ceremony performed by Joseph F. Jenkins.  The 1850 census of Kanawha County, Virginia lists their children as James Elvin (age 10), Wilbur Ladd (age 7), Owen Wiley (age 4), Julia (age 2), and Clivens (Elisius) L (age 3 mo.).   James B. Whittington served as a captain in the Union Army, Casdorph Co. E, 153rd militia, West Virginia.  In 1882, James purchased a total of 274 acres of land that adjoined his father’s acreage in the area previously called Carpenter and now commonly referred to as Whittington Hill on State Route 21.  James died on 12 August 1908.

William F. Whittington was born about Oct 1867 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He died the following year on 18 Nov 1868.

James Elvin Whittington was born Mar 1870 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Wilbur Ladd Whittington was born Abt 1873 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Owen Wiley Whittington was born 7 August at Carpenter, Kanawha County, WV.  Around the year 1901 he married Ethel Parker Thaxton (b. 1880), the daughter of James R. Thaxton (son of James Monroe Thaxton), and Martha A. Thaxton.  Owen worked as a Juvenile Probation Officer in Charleston until 1932 when he took the position of a Trust Officer at the National Bank of Commerce until his retirement. Owen and Ethel were the parents of Owen Ray, Edwin Keatley, Bernard Wiley, and Elizabeth Mae.  Another daughter, Helen, died in infancy. Owen died in 1959, and Ethel died in 1972.

Julia Whittington was born in Dec 1877 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Clivens L. Whittington was born in Feb 1880 in Kanawha County, West Virginia

The Children of Owen Wiley Whittington and Ethel Parker Thaxton

Owen Ray Whittington was born 26 July 1910 on Whittington Hill, Kanawha, West Virginia.  He married Garnett Gertrude Bragg (1916) on 18 January 1940 in Carter, Carter County, Kentucky.  Their children are: Lois Ann Whittington (b. 9 Aug 1940; d. 10 Oct 2000) and Roberta Lee Whittington (b. 1 Jul 1953; d. 16 Feb 2014).  Ray died on 16 Nov 1988 at the age of 86 in Gilmer, Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Edwin Keatley Whittington was born on 18 Oct 1913.   He married Velma Orpha Schultz (b. 30 Aug 1914 in Boone County, West Virginia.  Keatley was killed on 9 April 1951 at the age of 37 while piloting a C-47 which crashed on a hilltop north of Charleston near the Kanawha County airport. Keatley was buried in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, Kanawha, West Virginia.

Bernard Wiley Whittington was born on 19 July 1920.  He married Jean Elizabeth Wilhelm of Morgantown, WV.  Bernard and Jean built their home on Whittington Hill after purchasing land from the Eden’s family. Bernard retired from Union Carbide as an electrical engineer.  Bernard was an Engineering Fellow of the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  After his retirement, he continued to work at his own consulting firm.  He also chaired the Board of Commissioners, Sissonville Public Service District, and was a member of the Board of Directors at the Bank of Sissonville (now WesBanco). Bernard and Jean’s children are David Bryan (b. 1951), Anne Leslie (b.1954; d. 2008), and Brenda Wiley.  Bernard died on 17 Jan 2021 at the age of 100.

Elizabeth Mae Whittington was born on 20 May 1923. She married Charles Ray " Jock" Gillespie, (1923- 2004).  Elizabeth died on 27 Apr 2001 at the age of 77.
